Bobcats defeat Woodside in conference play
Maple Creek Middle School’s football teams started conference play at 1-0 Sept. 9, defeating the Woodside Warriors.
The seventh-grade Bobcats secured their win with defense controlling the game for the entirety of the first half. Linebacker Mason Baughman and defensive end Eero Bulkowski led the way in a scoreless first half.
Woodside delivered an onside kick to begin the game. The Bobcats kicked the ball deep to start the second half, and once again the defense took a stand following a sack by Hayden Hoover.
The Bobcat offense, led by quarterback David Callison, marched down the field, leading to a touchdown by Logan Heath. The offense got the ball back and opened up its passing game for a Jaidon Van Pelt touchdown. Following PAT attempts by Baughman, the Bobcats were up 14-0.
Nearing the end of the game, the offense was backed up in its own territory. On third and short, Callison rolled right to find Briggs Pardon who turned on the jets for a 60-yard score to end the game with 22 points after starting non-conference competition at 0-2.
Maple Creek’s eighth-grade team also defeated Woodside 22-0. After a scoreless first quarter, the Bobcats scored twice in the second on two touchdown runs by Nate Starks. The defense played sound football, earning its first shoutout of the season.
Both teams face Summit Middle School this week.
