The world opened its doors to the Homestead High School community Feb. 20 for A Taste of Homestead.

More than 100 students spent four months preparing to teach their peers, their families and the community more about the world’s cultures. Their method of instruction: food.

With six continents and 38 countries represented, guests had the opportunity to learn more about a country from student presenters while enjoying samples of the country’s cuisine, music and traditional dress.

Homestead’s World and Classical Languages clubs collaborated to start the event in 2015. Since then, the program has expanded and now includes all Homestead students and is attended by hundreds of community members.

Students chose a country to represent and were tasked to “think creatively and critically as they research food from that country and select one dish to prepare from that country.”

Each group was assigned a table in the cafeteria to display a poster about the country to communicate what they learned.

Visitors selected People’s Choice exhibits:

• 1st place: Dominican Republic — Jenna Lewis, Caroline Lutz and Rachel Lenardson

• 2nd place: Italy — Julia Dvorak, Josie Gery and Rocco Zirille

• 3rd place: Mexico — Madison Zitlaw, Bryant Zitlaw and Ariana Layton
