Mi Pueblo

Mi Pueblo is moving into a restaurant space in New Haven.

New Haven residents eager for authentic Mexican cuisine will not have to wait much longer. Mi Pueblo has purchased the former Golden Gate Chinese restaurant at 1326 Minnich Road in New Haven Plaza and is expected to be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner by mid-August.

The Chavez family has been operating Mi Pueblo Mexican Restaurant at 2419 W. Jefferson Blvd. since 2003 and promise to bring their fresh, flavorful taste of Mexico to New Haven.

They’ll be offering a full menu of mouth-watering choices ranging from quesadillas, burritos, fajitas and chimichangas to nachos, tacos, enchiladas, soups and salads. Steak, chicken and seafood dinners will be served along with vegetarian plates, children’s specials, combo dinners and a variety of side orders. Of course rice, refried beans, crispy chips and salsa will be a menu staple along with a wide variety of beverages and tasty desserts.

The New Haven store, which is slightly larger than the West Jefferson location, will be managed by Jesus Chavez and the original store will be managed by his sister, Silvia Chavez. The two have been sharing the managerial duties since 2016 at the store started by their parents, Gilberto and Tina Chavez. The New Haven restaurant will be similarly decorated with murals on the walls and colorful wooden tables and chairs to give diners a feeling of being in Mexico. Parking is available at the front of the store. It will not offer outside dining.

Their parents emigrated from Mexico nearly two decades ago. Both Jesus and Sovia were born and raised in Fort Wayne and are South Side High School graduates. They’ve been working in the family business since they were kids. Jesus has been employed in construction for a number of years, but has decided to go into the restaurant business full time.

Hours will be Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Lunch specials will be offered Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and breakfast will be served Saturday and Sunday mornings. Persons celebrating birthdays eat free. More information about the menu items can be found at mipueblofortwayne.com.
