The outside of the closed Waynedale Bakery, 2610 Lower Huntington Road, looks the same as the bakery did when it was open, but brown paper covering the windows portends good things to come.
Kathy Steenport is leasing the space to use as a bakery that will be called Hello Sunshine Bakery. The menu will consist of home-baked cookies, muffins, cakes, pies and possibly homemade breads. What she won’t be selling are doughnuts — a Waynedale Bakery specialty.
The owner of the building will be selling coffee in the shop, which will have a few tables for dine-in as well as carryout. Eventually Steenport would like to offer breakfast and lunch.
In addition to selling her daily goods, she also makes customized specialty items, such as wedding cakes.
While the outside hasn’t changed, she’s currently expending her energy on the inside. One long wall is painted a cheery yellow with white wood trim. New lighting has been installed.
“We just made it brighter and cheerier,” she said.
Eventually a new sign will be needed for the exterior of the store.
While Steenport doesn’t have experience running a retail shop, she is an experienced baker, working out of her home for the past 20 years. Friends suggested she consider opening a shop. With her son now off at college she and her husband are empty nesters, and the time for a change seemed right.
Initially hours will be 6 a.m.-2 p.m., with possibly some special events on some evenings. She doesn’t know when she will open yet, thanks to COVID-19, but hopes to open in January.
The pandemic is slowing down the permitting process, and she is waiting for a permit to add a bathroom for customers.
