A toast

Members of the Jammin’ Germans sing a song toasting the tapping of the keg and the official start of Germanfest 2019. The traditional festivities have been canceled again in 2021.

Germanfest will offer drive-thru dinners in two locations on Saturday, June 12, in lieu of the traditional celebration at Headwaters Park in Fort Wayne.

The sponsoring committee made the announcement in a news release April 20.

“We are heartbroken that circumstances will not allow us to deliver the togetherness und Gemütlichkeit that makes our festival unique for tens of thousands of guests and hundreds of volunteers,” the committee said. Germanfest thanked the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County Department of Health for attempting to make the festival possible.

The 2020 festival was canceled altogether due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We cannot wait to celebrate the 40th annual Germanfest Fort Wayne in 2022, so we’re keeping the spirit alive with a series of German experiences in 2021,” the announcement said.

“For nearly four decades, this festival has brought Fort Wayne together for food, drink, and a shared cultural experience,” sponsors said. “This year, we’re sending the flavor home with you.

“Join our loyal Germanfest community to partake in a traditional German meal on Saturday, June 12, from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. This is the only place you can get our very own recipe bratwurst, and quantities are limited, so order early.” Advance orders will be accepted at Germanfest.org starting April 26.

The meal will include the special recipe bratwurst in a bun, traditional sauerkraut, German potato salad and apple kuchen (strudel).

Drive-thru locations will be the Fort Wayne Sport Club, 3102 Ardmore Ave., and the Student Life Center on the Ivy Tech Community College North Campus, 3701 Dean Drive.

The announcement continued, “The Germanfest Committee has always been proud to celebrate the deep German heritage of the city of Fort Wayne ... There is no single component more essential to Germanfest than community and bringing people together. June of 2022 will be the 40th annual Germanfest Fort Wayne and the tradition will continue with Essen, Trinken und Gemutlichkeit!”

The committee said the four local German clubs (Maennerchor/Dammenchor, German Heritage Society, Fort Wayne Turners and Fort Wayne Sport Club) will host their Germanfest event, and promised to share details soon.
